it's indicative of a kind of slow-growth economy. i think that republicans still should make jobs issue number one in this campaign because even with a decent number, and by the way, this does probably take away a soundbyte for the republicans, but it's been three and a half years since we have had a a rate under 8%, but it's still a lousy job market for people out there looking. and what we call the broad unemployment rate, that includes people who can't find a full-time job, that's 14.6% or 23 million workers. >> in terms of cooking the books, jack welsh, the former g.e. ceo. saying it's too politically convenient. you can say to them what? >> i don't think there is a conspiracy here. i think it's almost certain there isn't. but what jumped out at people, wolf, in these numbers, is there are two surveys they do. one of businesses and one of households, and the how's hold survey found 875,000 new people working, and people are scratching their heads saying where did that number come from. the other report showed 110,000. >> and some

have noted, president obama didn't bring it up in the debate when he had a chance, talking about the economy, talking about all these folks who are unemployed or underemployed, and it would seem to indicate that president obama was saying that this was not worth pursuing. he certainly had used it on the campaign trail. it's been used in ads. but standing there on the debate stage, he apparently made the choice that it was unworthy of him and unworthy of the audience. will joe biden bring it up next week in his vice presidential debate? he may. we'll find out. >> it might have been a strategy, too. maria what do you think? >> i actually think it was a missed opportunity, randi. he should have brought it up. but i will guarantee you that democrats, including joe biden, will absolutely continue to bring it up, because after he said he thought he was wrong, or before he said he thought he was wrong, he doubled down on those remarks two or three times before he realized it was really hurting him in the polls. and we're talking about latinos this morning. majority of latinos are in that 47%, inclu

but as you point out, that's the key number, the economy. how does obama get out of this box of voters being not happy with the economy? but up until now, willing to perhaps give him another chance. i'm surprised. i'm surprised the debate turned things around, if they indeed have, that quickly. obama has two more debates to turn things back. so shouldn't get too excited by one poll. but this is the best news the romney camp has had in probably over a month. >> certainly is. but you're absolutely right, this is one national poll. there will be several more likely voters out there, even more important than the national poll members will be the battleground state polls in ohio and florida and virginia. we'll see what they show as well. ryan, thanks very much for coming in. >> thank you, wolf. appreciate it. >>> we're only three days away from another milestone in the presidential race. with all eyes turning to the debate between vice president joe biden and republican nominee paul ryan after the president's weak showing in the first debate with
